Stretching from the city centre, past Sat market and ending at Tam Ky dam, Tam Bac Lake is situated between Hong Bang and Le Chan districts. The lake previously belonged to An Bien commune and currently to the central strip of the city. This lake covers an area of approximately 50,000 m2 and is 3m in depth with tidal system.
In 1905, the French widened and straightened Liem Khe rivulet in An Bien commune in order to create a boundary canal. In 1925 they filled the canal leaving a short section of it at Tam Ky T-junction called Bonnal puddle. The puddle joined Tam Bac River and was known as Lap River ( or Tam Bac Lake) by Hai Phong people.
In fact, the lake’s name as Tam Bac was not accurately named, because Tam Bac (originally named Tram Bac) used to be the river adjoining the previous Lap ( originally was Liem Khe Rivulet which was enlarged into a canal). In 1985 the lake was greatly changed, a dam was built to bank up Tam Bac river so that the two roads, Tran Nguyen Han and Quang Trung could be joined. As a result of that, the lake was narrowed as we can see today.
Since the lakebed was dredged in 1997, the hygienic condition on its two banks has remarkably been improved. This lake was made totally clean, clear and green with flamboyant tree-lined lake sides where tourists can have relaxing and cool walks.
